Raptiva Side Effects Lawsuit: Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML).

Raptiva (efalizumab) is a subcutaneous injection administered once a week to treat psoriasis. The drug is a therapeutic antibody designed to block the activation of special immune cells called T-cells. Overactivity of T-cells leads to excess skin cells being produced, which build up in the form of plaques, causing the skin disease psoriasis. However, by suppressing the body’s natural defense system, Raptiva has also been associated with meningitis, immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, and other life-threatening infections.

Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML):
Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), is a rare and usually fatal viral disease that is characterized by progressive damage or inflammation of the white matter of the brain at multiple locations (multifocal). It usually is found exclusively in people with severe immune system deficiency, e.g. transplant patients on immunosuppressive medications, or AIDS patients. Raptiva suppresses the body’s natural defense system and can also increase the risk of serious infections, PML, and cancer.

Though not approved for children under the age of 18, the label also includes data from juvenile animal studies in mice (age equivalent between 1 and 14 years old) indicating a potential risk for permanent suppression of the immune system with repeat administration of Raptiva in this age group.

On December 12, 2008 Health Canada also issued a warning regarding the risk of serious infections, including PML, in patients treated with Raptiva.

On February 19, 2009 The FDA issued a Public Health Advisory to notify healthcare professionals of three confirmed, and one possible report of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a rare brain infection, in patients using the psoriasis drug Raptiva.

Raptiva Withdrawn From U.S. Market Due To PML Risks:
On April 8, 2009 Genentech and FDA notified healthcare professionals of the voluntary, phased withdrawal of Raptiva, a medication for treatment of psoriasis, from the U.S. market due to a potential risk to patients of developing progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). By June 8, 2009, Raptiva will no longer be available in the United States. Prescribers are being asked not to initiate Raptiva treatment for any new patients. Prescribers should immediately begin discussing with patients currently using Raptiva how to transition to alternative therapies. The FDA strongly recommends that patients work with their health care professional to transition to alternative therapies for psoriasis.
